...a funny "doctor" joke

(hehe. I only go by "Dr." when I'm in "teacher mode")

I love teaching Zumba® classes. The reason is simple: Every class feels like a party! Come join me and you'll see what I mean. You don't even have to know how to dance. Just move your body and follow my lead. It's easy! Come try it, I guarantee you will have a blast! I look forward to meeting you!

Come Dance With Me!
(I mean...*cough*... workout)

Why "Kiriana"?
When I was an art school student living in Miami, FL in the 1990’s (before Beto and Zumba®!), I had a roommate from Uruguay who told me “Kiriana” was the Spanish translation for my given name “Kerrie Anne”. I decided to adopt that name for my Zumba® Fitness Classes persona. Every teacher’s approach is unique, regardless of what is being taught. In terms of Zumba® Fitness, my approach is to keep the choreography and lyrics/content clean, fun, and family-friendly. There are plenty of Zumba® classes available with spicy lyrics, adult-only content, and sexy dancing. That’s not me and that’s not what you’ll find in my Zumba® Fitness Class. In my classes, whole families can dance together - all ages, genders, and abilities. We may even praise and worship international-style!

I specialize in teaching and learning. That means I’m facilitating for your benefit every time I lead a class. I want you to succeed in your exercise goals, whatever they are, no matter how small or how large. I know what it feels like to be too skinny or to have to lose weight for the first time. We can do this, one dance step at a time!

That means my classes will be fun, challenging, and full of zwag! Personal flavor is strongly encouraged! It’s your body, your workout. Just do what you can each time you attend!

I’ve always loved to dance, but I was too shy as a child to take classes. As a young adult I re-discovered dance more formally and also spiritually. My formal dance studio training includes ballet/pointe, tap, jazz, Hawaiian, Tahitian, Irish step (Riverdance), modern, and lyrical. My other dance experience includes Philippine and Hebraic folk, as well as the leading of praise and worship dance teams. That means my classes are definitely including a full variety of international rhythms as much as possible!

I’ve tried every form of fitness workout, but the exercises were mostly work. It wasn’t until I first studied for fitness certification in 2000 that I also discovered dance aerobics, Kari Anderson (Seattle Gym, formerly ProRobics), ballet barre fitness, and a renewed enjoyment for my fitness program. My husband and I couldn’t afford the ACE Exam testing or traveling fees at the time. I do intend to re-visit that too!

Much later, in 2013, to get me out of the house and out of my funk, my mom and husband took me to a month of Zumba® classes at the Philippine Cultural Center with ZIN Justine Ford. I was hooked! Thank God for husbands and moms! I was sad to move away in 2014, but then I found the classes with ZIN Jennifer Collins, whose venue hosted for the first time the Basic 1 Training I attended. And here I am for you!

I am very thankful for every ZIN™ who has influenced me so far. Besides the above-mentioned two, I also include ZJ Rita Cohen, Virginia ZES™ April Smith, and the following  ZIN™ for their blogs on playlists, choreography, and for sharing the overall examples of their Zumba®  lives: Elizabeth Tran in Newport News, VA, Ching Brubaker in Wichita, KS, and Rob Powell in Charleston, SC. There are continually others, like ZJ Von Stanley Gossi, who taught me more about Cumbia in 3 hours than I have ever learned about any other dance form in years!
